Pedagogics The Maria Montessori School in Kassel

The doors of the classroom remain open - "Help me to do it myself" is the motto for the lesson. Children want to learn and in the Maria Montessori School in Kassel they can do this as much as they want to. The teachers help them to do this. The small first grader puts her tongue between her lips. She is sitting at her place in the classroom and is counting. The sums get harder but the girl perseveres. She does not lose her concentration. At last, she is ready.
She gets up, goes to her teacher that is practising reading at that moment with another classmate and waits. The Montessori teacher looks up, checks the exercises, praises the child and turns back to the child reading. The girl who has been counting clears her paper away and intentionally makes her way to a corner of the room. Here some things are stored that at first look like toys. "But you do not play with them", states the teacher because the lines between playing and learning are blurred in the Montessori School. The girl takes one of the toys -
a thread game. She goes back to her place and starts to thread. The pedagogue:" the school girl hurt her wrist after counting for so long. "Now she is loosening her fingers with the thread game. She is relaxing and training her fine motor skills aswell. Teaching assistants and volunteers work together so that the children themselves are allowed to learn what they want and how quickly they want it.
